Fluctuation of finished film width will lead to more waste in subsequent bag-making and slitting processes. Unstable film width is mostly related to bubble stability, blow-up ratio, haul-off speed and melt state of raw materials. The core of controlling film width for Dalian plastic film blowers is to stabilize the blow-up ratio. Linked adjustments shall be made from multiple links including die selection, internal air volume control, haul-off parameters, cooling air ring, deviation correction and routine maintenance to keep the film width within tolerance.
The die gap and initial extrusion state lay the foundation for film width control of Dalian plastic film blowers. Die diameter determines the basic parison size, and matched die specifications are required for different target film widths. It is not feasible to produce extra-wide film with an undersized die. Calibrate the gap around the die before startup to ensure uniform extrusion thickness. Uneven extrusion on one side will make the film bubble deviate sideways and cause unstable width indirectly. Before launching a new order, verify the target folded width and preset the blow-up ratio according to the folded width formula. The conventional blow-up ratio for PE film shall be kept within a reasonable range. An excessively high blow-up ratio easily causes bubble shaking, while an overly low one leaves little room for width adjustment.
Stabilizing the internal air volume of the bubble and precisely controlling the blow-up ratio is the key to adjusting film width for Dalian plastic film blowers. The air volume inside the bubble directly determines the bubble diameter and further changes the folded width. Increasing internal air volume enlarges the bubble diameter and widens the film; discharging part of the internal air reduces the bubble diameter and narrows the film. The space inside the bubble is a closed air chamber during production. Frequent large-scale switching of the air inlet and exhaust valves shall be avoided, as sudden air volume change will trigger sharp film width variation. After stable production, only micro air supplementation is generally adopted to compensate for minor air leakage of the bubble. Meanwhile, check the sealing of the bubble end and haul-off nip rolls. Poor sealing of nip rolls leads to continuous air leakage and gradual narrowing of film width.
The air volume and pressure uniformity of the cooling air ring affect bubble shape and width stability. Uneven air output and inconsistent air pressure around the air ring of Dalian plastic film blowers will make the bubble swing side to side and snake, resulting in continuous film width fluctuation. Clean the air ring duct regularly to remove plastic dust and molten residue blocking the air outlets; adjust the air volume around the ring to ensure symmetrical cooling airflow. The cooling air volume also affects the frost line position of the bubble. Frequent fluctuation of the frost line height changes the melt stretching state and synchronously alters the film width. Only when the frost line height stays stable and the bubble shaping position is fixed can the film width be easily controlled.
Matching haul-off speed and extruder speed helps stabilize film width synergistically. With constant extruder output, faster haul-off speed longitudinally stretches the film, tends to shrink the bubble diameter and narrows the film; slower haul-off speed causes parison accumulation, easily enlarges the bubble diameter and widens the film. For Dalian plastic film blowers, fix the extruder speed first and fine-tune the haul-off speed during adjustment. Avoid drastic speed changes in a short time. The ratio of extrusion and haul-off shall cooperate with the blow-up ratio. Adjusting only haul-off speed without controlling internal bubble air volume may result in qualified width but excessive thickness deviation, so both width and thickness indicators shall be considered.
Bubble stabilizers and ambient control reduce width drift caused by disturbances. Workshop airflow and cross draft are common causes of bubble shaking for blow film machines, especially during seasonal changes or door ventilation in Dalian workshops. Equip the machine with bubble stabilizer frames and rings to restrict bubble swing; minimize airflow blowing directly onto the bubble in the workshop. When the bubble tilts or drifts, check the position of stabilizer plates and adjust them symmetrically. Changes in the melt flow rate of raw materials also affect forming. Test production shall be conducted first after changing raw materials or regrind proportion, and the blow-up ratio and haul-off parameters shall be recalibrated.
Online monitoring, fine adjustment and closed-loop control keep the dimension stable. Production lines with proper conditions can be equipped with online width gauges to collect film width data in real time and trigger automatic alarms for out-of-tolerance values, assisting operators to replenish or exhaust air timely. For production lines with manual inspection, sample and measure the folded width at regular intervals and record readings. Make small and frequent adjustments instead of waiting until the deviation becomes too large. Also inspect the haul-off rubber rolls. Worn roll surfaces or uneven pressure will cause film slipping and unstable haul-off speed, which also leads to film width fluctuation. Ensure uniform pressure around haul-off rolls to prevent film slippage.
Shutdown maintenance and fault troubleshooting reduce chronic dimension failures of Dalian plastic film blowers. Clean die buildup regularly, as accumulated material on the die will change the extrusion state and destabilize the bubble. Check whether the air pipeline valves leak or jam; valve failure will cause out-of-control air volume. If the film width fluctuates periodically, give priority to checking blocked air rings, slipping haul-off rolls and bubble shaking. If the film width keeps narrowing unidirectionally, focus on air leakage at nip roll seals. Save a set of standard parameters after each material or specification change for quick parameter resetting in subsequent restart.
By matching die specifications, stabilizing internal bubble air volume, balancing cooling air ring airflow, coordinating extrusion and haul-off, installing bubble stabilizers and conducting regular measurement, Dalian plastic film blowers can keep film width within process tolerance and reduce reject rate in slitting and bag-making.
